Description
The Marbled Salamander is one of the few salamanders to lay their eggs in the fall.Females make a nest in or around vernal pools and stay with the eggs for about a month or until they are covered by the fall rains. The embryos start to develop as soon as they are laid, but can not hatch until they are covered by water, which may not be until the following spring. How the embryos can survive the harsh cold winters is not only a mystery but is truly amazing!
